Uroguanylin

Space-filling model of Uroguanylin

Eat something salty and the gut releases uroguanylin, which does two things at once: it tells the intestine to pour fluid into the bowel, and it signals the kidney about sodium — a direct line between the meal and what the kidney does next. Its practical legacy is a copy rather than itself. Plecanatide, a modified uroguanylin approved for chronic idiopathic constipation, carries a Phase 3 randomised trial, and that trial is what sets this record's evidence tier. Uroguanylin has not been given to people as a treatment, and the other reference on file is the 1993 paper that first purified it.

Mechanism

Activates guanylate cyclase C on intestinal epithelium, raising cyclic GMP and driving chloride, bicarbonate, and water secretion.

Reported effects

What sources associate with this compound. Reported categories, not outcomes we have graded — each would need its own citation and rung.

Identity

PubChem CID 5488765 computed 3D conformer Space-filling 3D model of Uroguanylin, carbon grey, nitrogen blue, oxygen red
Built from the SMILES on this record — the atoms and bonds are exact. The shape is one computed low-energy pose, not a measured structure: a flexible peptide in solution has no single conformation, and where the SMILES leaves a stereocentre undefined the pose commits to one arbitrarily. The skeletal formula below claims connectivity and nothing more, which is what we actually know.
