Psoriasin (S100A7)
Psoriasin does not attack bacteria: it starves them, binding zinc so tightly that Escherichia coli cannot get the zinc it needs to grow — a siege rather than an assault. Its role in human skin was established by subtraction rather than addition: when researchers blocked psoriasin on healthy skin with an antibody, the skin lost most of its ability to kill E. coli, which is how it was identified as the principal E. coli-killing activity of the skin surface. It is also made in large amounts in psoriasis, which is how it got its name. Nobody has ever been given psoriasin, and the entire record concerns what the body does with the psoriasin it already makes.
