PEA
PEA is palmitoylethanolamide, a fatty molecule the body makes for itself and which is swallowed for pain; it is sold as a food supplement and licensed as a medicine nowhere. It is among the better-evidenced compounds in this part of the corpus, and its trials have gone to unusual places: irritable bowel syndrome, jaw joint pain, menstrual pain, and loss of smell after COVID-19. A quadruple-blinded trial in 66 people with painful diabetic nerve damage found both pain severity and pain interference fell further on 600 milligrams a day than on placebo. The pooled analysis of eleven double-blind trials in 774 people favours it too, but it combined nerve, joint and gynaecological pain, so that headline figure describes no single condition.
