Noopept
Noopept is a synthetic molecule of two amino acids, developed in Russia and approved as a medicine there while being sold everywhere else as a nootropic, a supposed cognitive enhancer. It has a neat piece of pharmacology behind it: in the body it is converted to cycloprolylglycine, a molecule the brain already makes, which modulates AMPA receptors. The corpus grades it at animal evidence, on rodent studies in which it restored spatial memory and raised nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the hippocampus. None of its eleven citations is a controlled human trial, and several are the opposite kind of paper — European medicines-control laboratories surveying it as an unapproved substance appearing in supplements.
