Nonapeptide-1
The usual target for a skin-brightening ingredient is tyrosinase, the enzyme that assembles melanin. Nonapeptide-1, sold as Melanostatine 5, aims a step earlier: it is described as a competitive antagonist at MC1R, the receptor through which alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone tells a pigment cell to start making melanin at all. Blocking the order rather than the assembly line is a genuinely different point of attack. The evidence for it stops at the cell — nonapeptide-1 acetate reduced melanin content and tyrosinase activity in cultured human melanocytes — and no study on file measured pigmentation in a living person. The one human trial containing it tested a multi-ingredient cordyceps cream with sunscreen.
