GLP-2 (Teduglutide)

The gut grows its own lining on instruction, and glucagon-like peptide-2 is the instruction. Teduglutide is a laboratory-modified copy, built to resist dipeptidyl peptidase IV, the enzyme that clears the natural hormone, so it survives in the blood long enough to work as a drug. It does one specific job: in short bowel syndrome, where too little intestine remains to absorb food, it thickens what is left. The evidence is settled rather than suggestive — a Phase 3 placebo-controlled trial in which 63 per cent of patients cut their intravenous feeding by at least a fifth at 24 weeks, an earlier open-label study, and approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration as Gattex in 2012.

Mechanism

Activates GLP-2 receptors on enteroendocrine cells, myofibroblasts, and enteric neurons, increasing villus height and absorptive surface.
