Space-filling model of GLP-1 (7-36)

GLP-1 (7-36) is the original, the human hormone every drug in this class was built to imitate, cut from a larger protein in the gut wall and released within minutes of food arriving. It raises insulin only when blood glucose is already high, suppresses glucagon, slows the stomach and reduces appetite. What it can do is on file plainly: in ten people with type 2 diabetes and an HbA1c of 11.6 percent, a four-hour infusion of the natural peptide brought fasting glucose down to normal. It is not itself a medicine, for the reason that defines the whole field, which is that the body clears it in minutes, so every therapeutic version is a modified copy built to survive longer.
