Chemerin
Body fat is not inert padding but a secretory organ, and chemerin is one of the signals it sends. Released by fat tissue, it doubles as a chemoattractant, a chemical shout that pulls immune cells to a site, which places it exactly at the junction of obesity and inflammation where a great deal of current research sits. Blood levels track with body fat, insulin resistance and inflammation, which makes chemerin a marker in the sense that a thermometer reading is a marker.
